Nice very illustrative samples, Klaus!

Indeed, the contrast in the f1.4 images still is very usable. And it clearly is a very sharp lens. Only thing that is not so wonderful is the bokeh, they did not pull off the miracle again they performed with the 85mm f1.4!

If in future I go full frame, this is indeed a very interesting f1.4 lens. Not for my uses of 35mm on APS-C.

Well, you would find the same thing if you would compare the

EF 85L vs. EF 35L ...

it is a much shorter focal length ... so it is probably not possible

to get the same creamy bokeh that a 85 delivers.

Hey Klaus,

I love the website, and I registered just to say this:

I've noticed that several of your sample shots on the Canon FF review suffer from the "5d2 Live View image-bottom vignetting" problem. This happens when you use a lens with no AF-confirm chip and shoot in Live View...for some reason, particularly at fast shutter speeds, the shutter doesn't clear the bottom of the frame in time. It's easily solved by focusing, then turning off Live View, or by getting a chip! If you don't know what's going on, it'll make you think there is something seriously wrong with a lens (I was pulling my hair out until I read about it the first time!) Might this have had an effect on your vignetting tests?

PS - I don't mean to presume...just thought it might be helpful!

Well, I used LiveView for the vignetting tests and the results are perfectly symmertrical here.

I think the effect is probably more related to the extremely high shutter speed when using large apertures in outdoor situations.

Where this is more of a problem when doing it from LiveView - maybe. I can try in future tests.

You are confusing the smoothness of bokeh and the amount of blur. Of course, a 85mm lens gives way more blur. But is the blur smooth? Creamy?

No. The Canon 85mm f1.2 is quite smooth in its bokeh, but does not quite get there. The Samyang, is another story. The background bokeh of this lens is WAY more creamy/smooth than the others (Canon, Nikon, Sigma).

Same with the Zeiss 34mm f1.4, as far as the images I have seen can give a good impression. The Samyang has very busy bokeh, the Zeiss seems to have very smooth bokeh.
