Need Input for Wide Lens
#1
Hi, I'm hoping you all can help.

I'm trying to decide on a wide angle lens mainly for street photography

which includes architecture & people. Also landscape/nature. With nice Bokeh.

I shoot with a Nikon D90. And currently own the kit lens 18-105mm & Nikkor 50mm f/1.8.

I recently sold my 70-300mm since I rarely used it and it was too heavy to carry

around on the streets and hiking all day.

My budget isn't much $400.

So far I've looked at:

Nikon 28mm f2.8D AF

Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX

and some Sigma lenses...

I've looked online and I'm overwhelmed already and thought I'd ask someone here

so if you use any of the ones listed or have recommendations, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks Much,

missy

Hi Missy,

The 28 and 35 mm lenses you looked at are only WA lenses on a FF camera. Lenses similarly wide on your D90 would be 18 and 23 mm respectively. Since you indicated you have a limited budget, I'd suggest you look at lenses like the Tokina 11-16 F/2.8, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24, Tamron 10-24 and maybe the Samyang (or Rokinon, or whatever ti may be called in its different guises) 14 F/2.8. The latter is a FF lens, but will work well on APS-C too, of course. It is MF, however, unlike all the other ones, which allow for AF on your D90.

Considering you already own the 18-105, I would seriously consider t he Tokina 11-16 F/2.8. Excellent lens, and large aperture too, for such a lens.

HTH, kind regards, Wim
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....

The Voigtlander Color-Skopar 20mm is good on APS-C.

I subscribe to the Tokina Wim mentioned or the Sigma 10-20, which is an excellent lens on APC <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

It depends on the distance you will use on the streets... but I would suggest the Nikon 20mm f/2.8D for your D90. Maybe additionally the 35mm DX...

And for landscapes: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8...

...but these three would cost more than you budgeted.

Like Wim said, on APS-C (which your D90 is) you can't speak of wide angle with an 28 or 35mm lens. On APS-C wide angle starts at about 24mm. You might be aware of that, and maybe you are looking for a normal prime....

If so, both Nikons are in the right focal length range.

Personally, I would avoid the Nikon 35mm f1.8, as you mention "nice bokeh", and it is one of the least attractive bokeh producing lenses I have seen results of (in its focal range class).

The Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC is in that respect a much nicer lens, and I would recommend it.

Other lenses I would recommend: The Sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG Macro. Not a real macro lens, but allows one to shoot very close for a 24mm lens.

And the Tokina 35mm f2.8 DX Macro. C ompact, nice bokeh for the focal length, and is a true 1:1 macro lens to boot.

In case you did mean wide angle on APS-C, look at lenses with a 24mm focal length or shorter. 24mm on APS-C is equivalent, field of view wise, with 35mm lenses on 135 format full frame.

2 lenses I would recommend there:

The Sigma 24mm f1.8 EX DG macro, very affordable, and lets you focus remarkably close (which can be nice at times), with decent optics and decent bokeh.

The Voigtlander 20mm f3.5 SL II. Very compact, beautifully made lens. Manual focus only.

Seiing the results photozone got with the Nikon 20mm f2.8 D on the D200, I would hesitate to recommend this lens.

I hesitated to buy the 20mm as I've recently read the review on D200... But I said to myself, for 300$ how bad could it be... Here's a sample from D700... The bokeh is not so pleasent but the edges are not so bad at all... I think on a DX body, it would shine...

How can you determine anything from an image of less than 1mp in size? The only thing we can see is that the not in focus parts do not look good. For the rest.. we can't determine anything. Even cellphone photos can look great at these sizes. And even my Sigma 18-50mm looks a LOT better at f4, and that is a zoom lens.

My point: Just about any lens can be deemed acceptable, if this is your benchmark.

Thanks so much for all the input.

I did end up ordering the Nikon 24mm f2.8 and got a pretty good deal.

I'm going to play around with it and see how it goes.

I do appreciate all the advice.

I think this focal length will give you what you are looking for. It is a nice compact lens, have fun using it <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
