New Sigma lenses on the horizon
#1
http://photorumors.com/2011/02/07/sigma-...ew-lenses/

We knew about the 120-300 OS already, but the other three lenses are tempting:

- a new full frame 12-24 (a centering challenge, I'm afraid)

- 105/2.8 Macro with HSM and OS (nice!)

- 50-150/2.8 DC OS (that lens really needed OS)

12-24 nice, hopefully a good optical upgrade.

50-150 OS. great idea , idotic implementation. Zoom ring in the front is just inconvenient and causes you to accidently change focus when zooming. Also, the lens has lost its appealing compact size . One may as well buy a 70-200 which is at least FF compatible. Finally this stupid assemblance of differnt types of plastic looks cheap and crappy, just as the new 70-200 OS.

Actually, that's where I prefer the zoom ring personally. Not sure about others, but I prefer to hold the lens at the front, not the rear end, when shooting. So for me it makes perfect sense to place the zoom ring there (and that's in fact one of the major annoyances I found in the 200-400 VR).

Agree about the size, though.

Hmmm.. what's new?... The "FLD" glass, which is actually not a fluorite glass bu claimed to have the same performance (with affordable price). Makes me think of the Sigma "APO"s...

At the same adress, the FLD glass is also clamied to have very high light transmission. I'm afraid, these 4 FLD glasses will not be utilized by the max aperture of the lens...

From the single image that has been published, the lens looks very different compared to the current one.

I admit that there has been a change in optical structure (after all, the new one is longer)... The build quality can be better than the predeccessor also. But I curb my enthusiasm when it comes to new glass technology which is named as "FLD" but has nothing to do with being a fluorit element. I hope it performs well... All in all having variety of models on the FF compatible UWA side is always good for us the consumers.

If I understood you correctly you have some doubt about new FLD.

The test with

1. Sigma8-16

2. Sigma 17-50 OS

3. Sigma 70-200 OS

4. Tamron 70-300 VC

5. Swarovski binocular – I didn’t remerber the model number???

Shows that Sigmas FLD, Tamron XLD and Swarovski marketing name “BlaBla Bla” gives suprerior IQ that previous lens/binocular design.

As far as I know this glass is produced by HOYA and used by Sigma Tamron and Swarovski.

I'm with jennbenn. I like my zoom ring close to the body and focus near the front element. This is one thing that drives me nuts with my Canon 17-55/2.8 IS - zoom is near the front element.

if you want to see some pictures, here they are;

I think you are judging these lenses too quickly. Let us wait until they come out. I think the 50-150 OS is a great idea for all APC users. It may be a little bigger than the predecessor, but it is a hell of a lot smaller and less heavy than the 70-200's with IS/VR etc and it makes sense as a transstandard for a smaller body and it is no problem to handhold.

If they turn out to be duds, I will complain with you <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' /> but until then....Sigma has made a lot of lenses that got good marks in this site <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />, so give them a break!
