Nikon or Canon and then which camera?

I am watching your discussion with a certain amount of awe and then some incomprehension <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mellow.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> There are some details and expressions that I don't even understand. However I have seen your advice, looked at your reviews and those from DPR which I find quite good too and my opinion is clear; I can find what I want as well with Canon as with Nikon, I am going to wait for Photokina to make sure that I don't miss out on an obvious choice and in the mantime I have the time to plan a strategy for both brands, both with respect to bodies and lenses. However, when I see what good lenses cost, I wonder whether the right approach is not to pick the lenses you really want and then fit a body to them? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

If it is a specific range of lenses, which only 1 manufacturer provides, I would possibly agree. However, ergonomics should be the #1 deciding factor.

If you don't use a camera because it is too small, too big, has an interface that is too awkward to use or is too cumbersome to lug around, it won't be worth the investment. And with each of the manufacturers having their own sizes, weights, interfaces, etc., it is very important to get that right, because once you have a set of lenses you are not likely going to switch easily, due to the loss you might incur on capital investment.

Sure, the lenses are important, but you can get good stuff from either. Even the not-so-good ones are really merely excellent rather than extremely excellent <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />. This is something a lot of people don't seem to grasp when looking at tests. Good generally means very, very good, close to excellent or beyond excellent. I reckon much more important is rendering in this regard. Actually, at 6 MP with reasonable lenses we were already at the same level IQ-wise and resolution-wise of what we could achieve as very good amateurs and hobbyists, and at 12 MP what good professionals could achieve (with dslrs in 135 mm format that is, and their replacements in the digital world, or APS-C and FF camera bodies).

As I mentioned, for me it was easy because I found I had a problem with MF and Nikon bodies because of my handicap, but I was tending towards Canon anyway, first and foremost because I preferred the Canon ergonomics, and secondly because they had a few more lenses in their range I was looking for. However, as stated many times in this thread, that is very personal.

In short, please do yourself a favour, and get to grips with the preferred ergonomics first, and then only buy into the system with those ergonomics. In the mean time you can draw up a list of lenses etc. for each system and each body-type you're interested in, of course. That'll help a lot when you make the final decision. And waiting first for all of the Photokina announcements is IMO a very good idea anyway. That's only about a month away anyway <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />.

Thank you again jenbenn and Wim for well structured ideas. I agree with your process Jenbenn and I am of course convinced that the good "feel", in other words the right ergonomics for my hands and eyes are very, very important. I hear rumours that stock levels for 50s and D700 are low, which might mean that there is something new in the pipeline. We already know that there is a 60D coming and it would be very strange if that is not a 50d with video and some minor updates. That makes in some ways clear on the Canon side and Nikon has already shown the D3100 so the question is whether there will be some more. I think the success of video has been much greater than the manufaturers assumed and my bet is therefore on a 700s with video quite quickly. If it is ready and if it is going to have any impact, they have to announce it before the Photokina, so it should become clear within a couple of weeks. We shall see what we shall see <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Rumor is that a Nikon D90 replacement will be announced next month that sports a 16mp Nikon original (non-Sony) sensor.
#54
Yes, we're waiting for that announcement, too. If true, it will replace the D200 for DX reviews.

Hello Markus, may I ask if you are a Nikon user? If yes, have you got an intelligent suggestion for me? Smile7d or D300s? or D700? I was on the Nikon site before today and nobody is expecting anything, it seems. Before anubody catches me on the above expression; I do not mean to imply that all the other suggestions were not intelligent <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Yeah, yeah - he said with an addition as a quick afterthought <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> ROFL...

Well, wim already answered the first part of the question <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Yes, currently Nikon shooter (but not Nikon only), former Canon shooter.

Regarding cameras, I'm afraid I can't give you a useful advice, at least not if you expect me to say "choose camera X". IMO, there's not much to add to jenbenn's post above. You buy into a system and should carefully check every part of the system if it suits your needs, not just the camera.

Both Canon and Nikon now offer truly excellent cameras. The D300 made me switch to Nikon, the 7D is the camera I'd probably own now if I was still shooting Canon.

The D700 is a slightly different beast, though. It's a really excellent camera (owned one before I got the D3x), but "feels" a little old by now. Of course that doesn't make it worse than two years ago, when it was introduced, but it's likely approaching the end of its product life and a new model is thus not too far away. However, according to the rumor mill that update does not seem to happen at photokina. It's just a rumor, though, and we can't be sure until the expo doors open on September 21st.

Well, it does help to have your opinion. There is no doubt that I would buy the D3x if I could justify spending that much money. I also understand that most other cameras would feel old after the D3X <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> The D700 is my limitSmile, but I will probably go with the 7D or the D300S. Is there any particular reason in your opinion why I should take one or the other? I can't help feeling that Canon is more marketing driven and Nikon more engineering driven. That being said, there is no doubt that both are excellent and that one just has to make a well reasoned decision. (Like jenbenn says above) <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> And I ned to make one fast, because I am going away for 2 weeks on the 8th of August and I want the new camera for that trip. Kind regards vieux loup

Get the 7D. 7D is easier to say than D300s.
