Tamron 28-75 vs Canon 24-105
#1
Hey guys,

I would like to look for a 24-85 range lens.

Now I aim at Tamron 28-75 and Canon 24-105. F2.8 is not necessary to me.

My purpose is show and exhibition photograph.

My body is 450D, crop frame.

Who has used these lens before? which is sharper which is better?

Thank you

The Canon is more expensive, and probably more contrasty. The Tamron may be a tad sharper, but there will not be much in it. The Canon has way better build quality. The Canon focusses much faster and more silent. The Tamron may become problematic when using an external Canon flash. The Canon offers IS.

3rd candidate: The Canon EF-S 15-85mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Personally I'm not a fan of the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 even with its low price tag. It feels quite plastic, and softer than I like at f/2.8, thus negating its main selling point. (I used this on Sony in the past)

I do like the 24-105L. Very fast AF, and I like the quality through the whole zoom range. Built solidly too. Biggest drawback is the price... it is a more natural partner to full frame.

I currently do own the EF-S 15-85 as suggested by Brightcolours a lot. Less expensive than the 24-105 and to me still great quality throughout. If money was no object I'd get the 24-105L, but for a bit less or if you want the wide angle too, then the 15-85.

Since there is quite a bit of difference in price in between them, you

probably aim for the lower price and sacrifice some quality (build quality

in that case) ... but there are more choices, once you're in the 28-75 to

24-104 price segment ...

there is the EF 24-85/3.5-4.5 USM and also the EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM.

Just a thought...Rainer

For portrait, how about EF28-80/2.8-4L ?

Likely a good lens ... but with this one (as with the EF 28-70/2.8L) one should

be aware, that Canon does not repair these lenses any longer ... a failure

of the lens can make it to a complete loss.
