The A700 was popular with enthusiasts. The only "problem" with it is that was released in late 2007, about the same time and positioning as the Canon 40D to give an indication to its age now. It's way overdue replacement. The surprise was when they discontinued it there wasn't a replacement for it, leading to the gap today. The best crop camera they do now is the A550, which is consumer level e.g. closer to D90 or xxxD. The lack of A700 replacement contributed to me switching from Sony to Canon at that point.
Anyway, the lower cost new lenses will probably go down well with those lower body Sony owners, especially the 35mm... if I was still on Sony, I'd probably have the 30mm f/2.8 macro by now but would still want this 35mm for the aperture.
