Not as good as expected

Thanks a lot for the test. Very informative, as usual. It would be great if one could compare this lens to canon's 50 1.4. Any chance this lens will be tested soon?

Hum. Any comments comparing this lens to the voigtlander 58f1.4 (tested) and the canon 50f1.4 (not tested) ? From the test results it looks like the voigtlander has a bit higher resolution but bokeh is a bit worse; but there might be other comments to be made from actual usage (rendering and such) hence the question.

I reckon that I will test the EF 50mm f/1.4 soon. The V58/1.4 is not available in EOS mount which is a bit of a (further) drawback compared to the Zeiss. The V58 has a strange bokeh. I wouldn't call it bad .... just strange. Whether you like it or not is a very personal thing.

thanks for the test report for zeiss 50f1.4! Also this is very informative. I was a little surprised of the weak border resolution with 5DMk2 at lower apertures. I use Canon 50 f1.8 mkI, Leica 50 summicron, and also Zeiss

S-Planar 60mm macro and think that my 50mm 1.4 ze is a raelly good copy also in borders with 1DsMk2. Not as good as S-Planar macro, but good indeed.

I must say this test reflects my own (real life, not test chart) test results (30+ 50s, so far <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />, including C/Y 50 F/1.4). Not so good over the whole frame until F/2.8 and then suddenly very good, although the Canon EF 50 F/1.4 is a bit more gradual, but has other problems. This is typical for the designs of fast 50s, i.e., F/1.4 and faster, except for very few totally new designs of late, and the old Olympus Zuiko 50 F/1.4, which gets good around F/2. Oh, and the Minolta Rokkor 58 F/1.2. Not really 50, but quite good too wide open. All of these designs really date from the 50s to 70s, with the exception of Sigma 50 F/1.4 and Canon 50L, and I do think that this type of lens needs a good rethink to shine.

Funnily enough, all slower 50s, F/1.7 and slower, tend to be good from wide open, certainly better than their F/1.4 siblings, and are generally just slightly less from F/2.8 up to and including F/5.6, and equal again thereafter. Two exceptions: the old M42 Jena Domiplan 50 F/2.8, and the Prakticar MC F/1.8 in bayonet. I always suggest avoiding those two <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />.

Kind regards, Wim
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....

Exactly. The highest wide open resolution figures come from the Zeiss 50/2 and the lowly 50/1.8.

I´ve got a couple of questions:

1-Why the heck do I have a black rectangle on the forum, and I can not see but a fourth of the screen? Firefox user, yep.

2-Somewhere in the article says [but actually I don´t remember in which of the 3 Cosina lenses it is said] that those Cosina-Zeiss lenses only have autofocus confirmation on the ZE mount. Not true. The ZK mount does have focus confirmation, as it is something Pentax bodies always have had: the focus system is not depending on the lense attached [you will have focus confirmation even on old Pentax Screw mount or M42 lenses].

Sorry, no idea. Does the rest of the site work for you? I'm sure Sebastian can look into this ...

THis was certainly meant in the sense that on an EOS camera only the ZE lenses offer focus confirmation.

Not only ZK users but Nikonians (ZF/ZF.2) have focus confirmation with these lenses as well.
