next PZ Lens Test Report: Zeiss ZF/ZE T* Planar 50mm f/1.4
#6
I must say this test reflects my own (real life, not test chart) test results (30+ 50s, so far <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />, including C/Y 50 F/1.4). Not so good over the whole frame until F/2.8 and then suddenly very good, although the Canon EF 50 F/1.4 is a bit more gradual, but has other problems. This is typical for the designs of fast 50s, i.e., F/1.4 and faster, except for very few totally new designs of late, and the old Olympus Zuiko 50 F/1.4, which gets good around F/2. Oh, and the Minolta Rokkor 58 F/1.2. Not really 50, but quite good too wide open. All of these designs really date from the 50s to 70s, with the exception of Sigma 50 F/1.4 and Canon 50L, and I do think that this type of lens needs a good rethink to shine.

Funnily enough, all slower 50s, F/1.7 and slower, tend to be good from wide open, certainly better than their F/1.4 siblings, and are generally just slightly less from F/2.8 up to and including F/5.6, and equal again thereafter. Two exceptions: the old M42 Jena Domiplan 50 F/2.8, and the Prakticar MC F/1.8 in bayonet. I always suggest avoiding those two <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />.

Kind regards, Wim
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....
