Cheap Nikon-G to MFT adapter

I'm positive that if they make a Canon EF version of this adapter and keep the price similarly low they'll sell truckloads of it.

If I'm not mistaken, this adapter is possible because of the old mechanical aperture link in Nikon lenses. The adapter just lets you move that manually. To do a Canon version you would need translation electronics.

Why? The adapter mechanically closes the aperture.

Actually, there is no way to really control the closing of the aperture, unless you have a mechanical coupling that knows exactly how far to go. That is one of the difficulties to overcome, because if the camera it is mounted on doesn't support it, it really takes a lot of effort to try and figure this out and make it work reliably.

Next, a G-EOS adapter for Canon EF lenses is a lot harder to make, considering the little amount of space that is available to control the aperture itn the first place. Making it work reliably, controllably, and so that it will keep working with time (IOW, a mechanism that isn't flimsy), is even harder. To be very honest, the only reason to own a G-EOS adapter, apart from testing Nikon automatic aperture only lenses on a Canon body, is the Nikkor 14-24, as Canon doesn't manuafacture a lens equivalent (yet). This means the market is rather small for this, unlike for normal N-EOS adapters, with a wealth of lenses that stil have an aperture ring, for the MF enthousiasts amongst us. Note that a G-EOS adapter only has 3 settings due to the limited space and short distance over which the Nikon aperture lever travels, namely wide open, F/8, and completely closed.

I did own a 14-24 with G-EOS adapter. It is a very, very good lens, but rather cumbersome to work with in all manual mode, and having to close the aperture based on changing shutter times for optimal effect (going to F/8 first when metering, and changing it slowly until the shutter times indicate that the aperture of preference for a particular shot is reached). After I finally got a TS-E 17L I did eventully sell it as a result, because it didn't get any use anymore. The latter is even better anyway <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />.

I think I might have mis-understood the desire. I thought you wanted to use EF lenses on MFT, where the Canon lenses have only electronic interface so would be difficult.

I guess you actually want Nikon G on Canon body with aperture control? In that latter case, it might be possible, but I hate to imagine it. Existing Nikon lens to Canon body adapters are already very thin, so I'm not sure there is the space to add any more mechanical parts.

I don't think it is really possible beyond what G-EOS adapters do already. There is indeed no space left at all, and for these adapters the O-ring on G-lenses which have those, has to be removed already to gain a little extra space.

Wim, the 14-24/2.8 is exactly the lens I had in mind. I know many Canon FF users who have it.

BTW, the 17/4 TS is my dream lens.

Hi Yakim,

I did see your posts over at Fred Miranda <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />. I even replied to a few <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />. I'd really suggest, if you are planning on buying a 14-24 with G-EOS adapter, to continue saving a little more, and get a TS-E 17, honestly. If you have the funds to get a 14-24, plus G-EOS adapter, you're only an 85 F/1.8 away from the TS-E 17 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

You do need to get a better one than the one you tested from Canon Israel, however <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

I did own a Nikkor 14-24 with G-EOS adapter. My TS-E 17 was better than the Nikkor at any FL, by a small margin, but noticeably so in the corners. The TS-E 17 is also smaller, and if you really need wider, you can always resort to stitching two shifted shots, with an even wider FoV than the Nikkor is capable of. Also, it is much less flare prone than the Nikkor, although with my type of shooting I really saw it happening only once. The Nikkor is less contrasty, which at first look may seem to give it the edge, but in reality it records less "depth" that way. What I mean to say is that with the TS-E the shadows are darker than with the Nikkor. The really nice thing with the TS-E 17 is that it actually gives a nice 3D feel in many of the shots, despite it being an UWA. That is certainly much less the case with the Nikkor.

Kind regards, Wim

I have no lust for the Nikon 14-24/2.8. My humble 10-22 fulfils all my wide needs completely. The thing is, I do have an uncontrollable lust for TS. I have exhausted all the alternative solutions (which are comparatively cheap) but if you want to go wider, you must go Canon. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />
