7D or 5D Mark II
#11
calumet ist out of stock. They have closed the waitlist, because its gotten too long. The BErlin branch told me calumet got 10 5d Mark IIs for the whole of GErmany in 2010. He couldnt even say when he would get the next shipment.

Found a small retail store in Cologne (Foto Lambertin), though, whose manager claimed to have a good relation with the canon sales guy . He said he might get one or two bodies next week and will ship one, to me if he does.

What I find appaling is that if you call canon they say that there is no supply problem and that I should just go and buy the camera. This is like slapping the customer in the face.

You're right - it's practically impossible to find an units in Germany right now.

I don't know what the problem is, because in the UK there are plenty of suppliers with the 5D in stock. I remember having exactly the same problem when I bought mine: none of the German suppliers had any in stock.

Well, good luck, and I hope the guy can deliver!

Same problem here. I ordered a 5D II for a relative, almost two months ago. It finally arrived yesterday, and that was only the second one the shop received in 2 1/2 months, with another 10 or so on back order.

Ever since Canon laid off 1800 factory workers in Japan several years ago because of the impending crisis, and the Canon offices no longer keeping any stock at all, things have been very bad with regard to getting any new (semi-)professional equipment, and sometimes even any equipment whatsoever.

Not much better than with Nikon either; they laid off 1200 people at the same time.

What I really think is interesting is the fact that this way they made the crisis become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You can't sell anything if you haven't produced it yet, or don't have any stock. I know many retailers who have been struggling with exactly that. Enough orders, but impossible to fulfill, because neither Canon nor Nikon can deliver....

Kind regards, WIm
Gear: Canon EOS R with 3 primes and 2 zooms, 4 EF-R adapters, Canon EOS 5 (analog), 9 Canon EF primes, a lone Canon EF zoom, 2 extenders, 2 converters, tubes; Olympus OM-D 1 Mk II & Pen F with 12 primes, 6 zooms, and 3 Metabones EF-MFT adapters ....

I must add though - and this has little to do with ordering problems - that I lament the disappearance of the small, specialized camera shops. Okay, they can't compete with the price dumping of the large electronics retailers, so they have closed due to pressures of the market. But it is hard to get professional quality equipment, and even harder to find staff who know about the stuff they're selling.

So do I. I buy almost all of my equipment these days from the same retailer, who actually has this knowledge. He is about 5 to 10 % more expensive than the large electronics retailes, but I do get incredible service, and free capuccino's <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />, free sensor cleaning, and the company of a few persons who know what they are talking about.

O, and with brandnew stuff, he normally is cheaper than anybody else is, because his mark-up is always the same, whether the equipment is only minutes or a while longer on the market.

I actually try to visit the shop as often as possible, even just for a chat, or a meet with a few other like-minded people <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

Frankly, I don't. I can't lament the disappearance of $200 markups, rude and ignorant staff (if they aren't indifferent and lazy teenagers), the lack of quality goods, and the two week wait for any item desired ["Well ain't this place a geographical oddity--two weeks from everywhere!" - O Brother Where Art Thou]. I do occasionally find a shop that has a lot of used gear where I can save a few bucks, but Ebay presumably could fill that void as well.

I got the final wake-up call when I was trying to find out if a ring flash mounted on the Elan IIe would work with the two second mirror prefire I frequently needed for macro work. The unpleasant "experts" at the local shops didn't know and weren't concerned enough to look it up. B&H in New York sure hustled, and had the answer for me in less than one minute. I bought the ring flash from B&H and haven't looked back.

Perhaps things are different elsewhere, but to find what I need on the West Coast I pretty much have to travel to Seattle, San Francisco or Los Angeles. Or I can just look on the Interblogoweb.

IMHO much more crucial to pro photography are the small, innovative manufacturers of quality gear--I'm thinking of places like Really Right Stuff, Singh-Ray, Nik, Acratech, Kirk, and so forth. I would shower them with blessings, but being an atheist I'll settle for mutually satisfying business transactions. :-D

Good points, Scott - but it is different where I live. The small shops are often run by people who themselves are photographers and who enjoy what they're doing. The staff in electronics discounters are just cheap labour who might otherwise work in a supermarket or a call centre.

In Germany the main problem is, the big discounters have their handful of suppliers (Canon, Samsung, Sony, Hama) and you will never, ever, find a product from Zeiss, Singh Ray or Novoflex in these places. It's only the small shops that stock such 'exotic' items so you can actually see what you are buying.

And yes, I might pay 20% more, but I am helping keep someone in a job they enjoy and they won't be earning minimum wages like in the major retailers. Cheap is nice, but there's always a cost somewhere along the line.

Just got my 5d. Oh boy, this is so great. My lenses do what they are supposed to do and finally i can get shallow dof at wide angle. And the viewfinder... so good. This camera has a lot more creative potential than all the dinky apsc cameras i had before.

Whats not good is the grip though. While my 50d and the 7d I tried felt very comfortable even with heavy lenses, the 5Ds grip hurt in my hand even with a small lenses after a view minutes. I gues you cant have it all though...

Well, first of all, congrats!

Now wait till you see the the IQ this camera produces <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

Regarding the grip: I am sorry to hear that. Personally I used to have a 40D and 5D Classic, and I shot with 50D and 7D too, and I find I have no problem at all with the 5D II in this regard. Possibly, you need to analyze where it hurts and what from, to see if slightly different handholding positions make a difference to you. I find I have this problem with the 1D III, but then that is a very heavy and very large camera. I did find I have to hold that quite differently from my 5D and deliberately so for it to be comfortable to me to shoot with.

Have you considered the battery grip extension?
