How does Nikon do it?

There's quite a misconception out there thinking massive low-noise advantages can come over night. Nikon somehow seem to imply that they defy physics that all other mortals have to obey. Interestingly enough, in the midst of these supposed noise improvements, Nikon cameras are the least used in astrophotography* applications for some reasons explained in the first link below. The other links are also related to the same topic of "cooking RAW files" or manipulating the data captured by the sensor before writing them to the RAW files.

And what exactly is new here? It's been long known that Nikon cameras aren't very well suited for astrophotography, but that doesn't change the fact that the D3s is the best high-ISO camera on the market...

That's a good point. Now, if Canon employs the sensor technology used in the 1D4 in a 12 MP FF sensor, will they achieve the same result as the D3s? My suspicion is yes.

Also, I really do not know why Canon does not want to resort to in-camera RAW NR cheating like Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Panasonic etc. If everyone does it, why not join the party? Astrophotographers are just a very small group of users.

It is not just astro photography that will see effects. I really rather dislike the way Nikon gets rid of chroma noise, desaturating colours in the process. I rather have the photographer have the choice of how to deal with noise!

And if you really do like what Nikon does to its data, then it is easy to replicate its effects in PS (blur the a and b channel in Lab-mode).

So, I for one am HAPPY that Canon does not resort to those levels of NR you have no grip on or say in. That is the whole idea about RAW, give the photographer the freedom to do or not do what he/she wants and needs. If i would want the camera to do crap to the data, I would buy a Nikon. So no need for other companies to do the same, you already can buy it right now.

Actually Pentax is the other brand that does not cheat.

It is perfectly suitable for astrophoto just like Canon.

However this does not mean Nikon is no good for Astrophoto.

here is an example of a man shooting stars with a Nikon :

The results are just impressive.

As usual the photographer is more important than the equipment.

Pentax experts themselves admit Pentax applies in-camera RAW NR:

You can also see that happening in the DXOmark graphs for dynamic range and SNR. Till 3200, the graphs are relatively smooth curves, from 3200 they show a "lift", both for the K7 and the Kx.
