Canon 40D - does it worth?
#11
Thank you all!

My conclusion: it doesn't worth to change from 450D to 40D.

Now, how about from 450D to 550D. I would like 7D but the budget is limited. I will use the same lens, Sigma 24-70 .

I think the 550D is more affordable. I hope I will sell the 450D kit at a good price <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' />.

1. AF, seems a bit more accurate with the 550D.

2. The LCD screen is gorgeous, a big step up from the 450D.

3. Big jump in high ISO noise profile.

4. Sophisticated movie mode.

Those are the mayor differences, in my opinion.

Minus points compared to 40D/50D:

1. xxD has a more sturdy build, with a 2nd wheel on the back. Although I do prefer the compactness of the xxxD series, but that is personal.

2. 550D is slower in continuous shooting (frames per second).

3. 50D has a more advanced AF system (all cross sensors at each AF point) (40D too I think, but the 40D is not as good as the 50D in the AF stakes).

4. xxD has a bigger brighter view finder

5. 50D offers AF micro adjust, to reign in unruly non-calibrated lenses

I guess the budget wins!

I have a slightly different viewpoint on the VF here.

From my personal comparisons, the 550D has/seems to have the brightest VF of the APS-C bodies, together with the 50D.

Also, the 550D has a little less tunnel vision than the 50D, and certainly less than the 7D. IQ-wise the 550D is slightly better than the 50D, but the 7D again wins that competition, but only just. WB on 7D and 550D is also a little better.

Kind regards, Wim

Thanks guys - I've made my mind. I'll go for the 550D. I'll get back to you after the purchase is made.

Just got my 550D! Actually it's the Japan version, Kiss X4. First impression, amazing LCD. Bright, clear, wonderful colors. I wonder how to protect it now without losing that brightness and colors.

I will come back with some photos....

Congrats!

No need to protect the brightness and colours of the LCD <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />. However, to protect it from getting damaged, you could always put on one of those layered glass protective screens. The better ones enhance contrast too, so it is a worthwhile investment IMO.

Can you recommend one, please?

Assuming you are in Europe, something like this:

http://www.cameratoo...EOS%20550D.html

or the Hama variant:

http://www.foto-koni...eos_5dmkii.html (there should be one for the 550D too, couldn't find it very quickly).

You should be able to find something like this. It's maded of layered, hardened glass with layers of plastic between the glass and an anti-reflective coating.

I use the GGS one, and am very happy with it. I am lucky that my camera dealer actually affixes them free of charge: I am very good at getting them skewed, and he just does it, straight, perefectly aligned, in less than 2 minutes, including cleansing of the LCD first <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />.
