Lightroom 3 final is here

Disappointingly, no surprise feature.

A rather modest upgrade too. Lens distortion & perspective correction module, although complete, is just catching up with dxo...

Most other features I don't care for... I just wanted a good print output module (output sharpening, soft proofing,...). But hey, I'll buy the update before I get locked out of Adobe money milking strategies.

Still good news.

Hey, lens distortion and perspective correction is my #1 reason for taking an image out to an external editor. Not having to do that will speed up my workflow for certain images quite a bit.

How does the speed compare to LR2 for you?

Lars,

It is a good thing they finally added it, no doubt. Just lacking a "breakthrough", other than the new raw engine.

I've ordered the box version this morning. ETA is Thursday, I'll let you know then.

Greetings,

S.

It's quite a bit faster! As far as I have seen now in all of the modules.

Love the new RAW engine! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

I've just migrated my 3beta and 2 files together into a single catalogue.

Be warned that there is a nasty bug in the "import as catalogue" feature; if any of the images in the catalogue you are importing from are in the same folder as the catalogue you are importing to, the import will fail "for an unknown reason". The support people say it will be fixed in the first point upgrade.

Workaround if you have two catalogues you want to concatenate: convert them both to the new format; then export as catalogue from one of them ONLY the folders that are not in the other. You can then import from this exported catalogue (don't export the actual image files, ie do not tick "export negatives")

You can then deal with the remaining overlap folders on a case by case basis.

Oh: it certainly seems much faster than 3beta; especially when scrolling in the grid.

Better RAW engine, faster, distortion correction, ... I'm afraid I'll have to upgrade this time around, too. But not until after the first point release.

My first impressions of LR3 are very positive. I think it is a major step forward. For me, this update puts all my main troubles with LR2 (non-satisfying sharpening and noise reduction, missing perspective and lens distortion correction) to rest.

I already bought the upgrade and will merge my LR3beta and LR2 catalogues soon. Thus, thanks a lot for the hint regarding the bug in the "import catalog" function, DavidBM.

Old news but after playing a little with lightroom 3, here's my opinion.

As many said, the new RAW engine really is impressive. Although it does seem to make low ISO noise more visible (very fine grained;smoothed easily with luminance slider with good control of details) it really does wonders at high iso pictures. Just switching from 2003 process to 2010 shows : improved shadows, contrast, detail. Clearly 1,1&1/2 stop improvement, at least on the E-P1.

Performance wise, I must say I'm not sure I saw such a big boost. My system is a quad core intel q6600 + 4 gigs of ram + gf8800gtx (tremendous graphical power probably completely unused) so it was quite good already I suppose.

The lens correction module, in manual mode, is quite well done and the few auto mode profiles seem to work quite nicely too.

The custom print package is also nice but frankly, this module still seems a little underachieved.

And this time, no issue at migrating my lightroom catalog... I remember dreadful times when two sets of tags were created because I switched languages (red labels, labels rouges..., first year computer science students learn to implement locales correctly), flags status would be disrupted... It was pathetic but this time, seemed to work just fine !

Greetings,

S.
