Sony Zeiss FE 55m f1.8 ZA : 899.99 USD. A 7 element lens, by the way.
Sony Zeiss FE 35mm f2.8 ZA : 799.99 USD. A 7 element lens, too.

And sure, the price of the Nikkor AF-S 58mm f1.4 G 1599.99 USD, that is extra mad. Madder than Sony at least.

Well, the Sony 50mm f/1.8 costs 199USD ...
The Sony 85mm f/1.8 costs a reasonable 550USD.

Citing the price tags of Zeiss lenses as a comparison is only sort of valid. We all know that there's an extra premium just because of the brand name.

The Sony 50mm f1.8 is a simple old design (same/similar to EF 50mm f1.8 II and EF 50mm f1.8 STM). With according performance. Not fair to point to that lens, really, as it is not comparable to a modern lens (it is of course totally comparable to the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM). In fact, the Sony FE 50mm f1.8 is a copy of a 50mm formula for SLRs, with an integrated mirrorbox-replacement tube.

Why mention the 85mm f1.8 Sony at all? It is not a 50mm, nor a 35mm. It is not as if the Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8 G is more expensive.
The "Zeiss" lenses are Sony lenses with a Zeiss label, they are not manufactured by Zeiss and its magical unicorns... They were the lenses the Sony FF A7 series was introduced with, and they are the closest equivalents on the Sony FF side, I think.

I mentioned the 85mm f/1.8 ... because it is a f/1.8 yet affordable.
Whether the N50S is comparable to the Z50 ... we'll see ...

You must mean the Z55 Big Grin
Whether this new Nikkor 50mm is comparable to the SonyZeiss 55mm... It most probably is, with its modern design and 2 aspherical elements.

On this page somewhere the MTF for the SZ55mm f1.8:

Yep, seems be able to even outperform it.

The Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is a nice affordable-ish lens indeed. It is also not overly complex, with 9 elements and no aspherical elements.

I'd say Zony 55/1.8 is rather reasonably priced. Show me another 50-55mm lens with similar or better performance and compare the prices.

58mm f0.95 lens would be a halo lens, just like the 50mm f1 and f0.95 lenses have been in the past. Halo lenses never are "ridiculous", they just show off what the brand is able to make at the point of time.
Why would it have to be manual focus?

Umm have you seen the size and read the coverage? The lens is manual focus only. The size is larger than a 70-200mm 2.8. From the patent data this lens will definitely be around 2kg. How practical do you think this will be handheld?

The manual focus is - hopefully - not done by wire, it's the only lens so far with an imprinted distance scale. And comes with a tripod socket, but unlike to Sigma and Tamron, Nikon still haven't discovered the advantages of an Arca Swiss dovetail. Same - sadly - for the new 500/5.6 PF.

The 58/0.95 is likely going to cost about $6000. This is nuts - but then again I guess it wasn't created to move loads of units, more as a "look here what we can do" demonstration (and a "screw you" to those who have been deriding Nikon for their purported inability to make ultra fast lenses for the F mount).

A Leica 75/1.25 Noct sells for nearly 13.000.

One could buy a lot of flashes for that money, if one really has to take pictures in the dark *duck and run*. Big Grin

Or eight copies of the new Canon 85/1.4 IS, with a few bucks left to fetch some beer. I know, I did a calculation when that Leica was released - just for fun. Smile

Or a Sony A7III and a Mitakon 50/0.95...

...and another A7III...

...and another Mitakon 50/0.95... with some change left.
