MTF chart for the new Samyang 45/1.8
#11
A review of the Samyang 45/1.8

Seeing as how the EPhotoZine is usually gung-ho about most lenses, the "moderate" results they get from the Samyang leave me a little wary about the actual quality of this lens. Smile But the proof is, always, in Klaus' hands. Smile

I agree, Rover. I'm little wary too.

What I think I do see in the test images though, is that it renders quite nicely, which already puts it above the 35/2.8 in my book, so I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be sharp enough at f1.8 wider than just in the very middle like the Sony FE 50. That one is sharp in maybe the middle 30%, and I'm hoping the Samyang will do well in maybe the middle 50-60%. If not, I'm not sure it'll be worth the money.

It's price is around $400+ on line at the moment .......... that's a little steep by Samyang levels even with AF..... in fact the word ouch springs to mind!

...... that small difference of 5mm seems to be at a premium here ..... as it's rubbing shoulders with some very affordable nifty fifties ........

.....with the standard Nikon/ Canon/ Sony F1.8 species costing considerably less (50mm) ...... the cheaper option might be to take a pace backwards ....

The Sony 50mm f1.8 costs a LOT for what it is (see the Canon 50mm f1.8 STM), and this Samyang easily is the nicer lens. So I's go for this Samyang in a heartbeat (if I was so silly to have a Sony A7 something;-) ). The last Nikon 50mm f1.8 has not been produced since 1985 ;-)

I don't know if I'm confused BC ...... but what 50mm Nikkor are you talking about there? ....

  ...... the AF-S 50mm F1.8G was first launched in 2011 to replace the AF-D version ....

..... I bought a copy ....... it's nothing super special but then at 129 euros ........

........ a third of the Samyang's listed price.

You were talking about a Nikon, not a Nikkor ;-)
Last Nikon 50mm f1.8 was made in 1985. http://cannonfastreviews.com/nikon-50mm-f1-8-series-e/

And about the Nikkor AF-S 50mm f1.8, its manufacturer's list price is €249 :-P Cheaper than that new Samyang, but I would not recommend a Nikkor DSLR 50mm prime to a Sony user.

Oh my god ........ we are down to hair splitting of names!!

Your such an optical historian BC!  Smile

Who would pay 249 euros for a 50mm F1.8G Nikkor ....... in this day and age ??

Not everyone is in the position to buy a good 2nd hand copy of that lens...

129 euros was for a "brand new lens" BC ........ in a gold Nikkor box .........(grey market)

Actually, it will be interesting to have OL's resolution chart of the Samyang before us .....  (lens mounts aside for the moment) ....... for comparison.

........  the sharpest of the sharpest of the recent ML offerings is the Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S which is touted as being as sharp as anything out there ...... wide open!
