No, it probably didn't. But as far as the Canon Camera Museum implies, there was a great deal of flux in the lineup for the first half of the EOS system's lifetime, especially at the low end. The company was constantly releasing new kit (or comparable) lenses - like they say, throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what would stick. Smile I think there was like five iterations of the (rock bottom) 28-80 kit zoom in the 90s, for example. So it appears they found other methods of dumbing down the cheap lenses, zerging the market with all kinds of junk for years.
