Then again it was reported to fall to f/7.1 pretty late in the zoom range, certainly after 400mm. Lots of people probably started setting their cameras to 1/2 stop exposure steps because it reports f/5.6 at 400mm if set up this way (f/6.3 if set to 1/3 stop intervals). In reality it's prolly something like f/6.1 at 400mm, so not quite rounds down to f/6.7.

That was pretty surprising though, since I used to expect it to turn f/7.1 at about 320~350mm tops.

Then they would have to construct the lens in a way that the aperture (size) enlarged from 320 to 500mm to stay at f7.1 (so a fixed max aperture (f-stop) over that whole range. That would be a bit odd..

Don't most of the variable aperture zooms hit the smallest of the aperture range rather earlier than the max. focal length, like - say - the Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM becoming an f/5.6 lens by 162mm (as reported by Bryan of TDP in his review)? I know the Canon 100-400 II was a positive example though, only going to f/5.6 after 312mm, but it's a rare case.
