... Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD ... relabeled that is. It's the old version, not the new G2.
LOL. Nikon, how far have you fallen?

When someone is responsible for his own disasters he has nobody to blame but himself ...
You can't hide such things in 2021, a minor heating issue made disasters for Canon last year and was the internet talk for months while only a tiny fraction of the users would ever notice it.
The damage to the company image should be considerable here.
Why they diddn't rebrand the G2 ??

I'm quite surprised by Nikon's move. It reminds me of Pentax' strategy of rebranding Tokina and Tamron lenses.
A shame that Nikon didn't use the G2 design. Choosing the first design is probably not gonna help promote the Z system IMO.
Indeed, the G2's MTFs are impressive, especially at the long end!

Nikon has also used Tamron lens designs (or collaborated in the designs) in the past. There were the two 70-300mm lenses from before the digital age (the pre-VR lenses), and the 14mm f2.8D. So, not totally unprecedented.

That's all fine but this lens is more expensive than the G2 ...
This may be irrelevant for Nikon users because they don't have access to it anyway ... yet still ...

I agree, the price is a bit silly, considering it is a Tamron and Tamron offered it for $799 at introduction. On the up-side: Marcus can just copy-paste your Sony review!

David, the ML Tamrons are not the same designs as the old DSLR ones so I'm not sure that saying it's that same lens offered for $300 is fair?
Unless I am mistaken somewhere, maybe in the sense that there is a way to purchase a non-totalled and legitimate Tamron 28-75 for E-mount for $300?
