Unsually, diagonals are not important to us. We tend to judge things by the width of the image, that is just how our perception works. Yet, with crop factors, they tend to use the diagonal. A poor compromise. But since 3x4 and 2x3 are not THAT different, it is of little consequence for understanding similar FOV and similar DOF (equivalent focal length and equivalent f-stops).
