Mine's been in repairs three times for being dropped, the motor becoming worn down, and for mechanical looseness. So you can say that my copy really has been abused... But still going strong.

That's what i have been talking about, most of the samples on the used market are like yours but yes this lens can live for ages with proper maintenance

I can say for sure that it's more robust than the 100-400 (figures, because the latter is older, extending and not weather-sealed).
While I love the 100-400 as well I still see the case for owning both it and the 70-200. There's been just one case when I was taking them out at the same time, however (because I had two back-to-back shoots that required both is all).
