The original was very good - doesn't look like there is a compelling reason to update like there was with the 28-75. And the one issue that could see some improvement is actually the least likely one to be addressed in any update.

Interesting. I like the concept of original, curious to see the improvements on v2. Supposed text release says lens is to have optical stabilization (VR), so one tickbox checked.

Oh... I kind of overlooked the addition of IS, but then again, it would technically be the "70-180 VC", not the "70-180 G2" in this case? (much like in the rest of similar cases)

Indeed the release text (added later to the linked article) is very interesting, it's going to be a very good lens. Lighter than SEL70200G and just a tad heavier than SEL70200G2, but it's ƒ/2.8.
