I think they made a mistake with the price. Should be $399 not $1399. Ridiculous for such as simple lens

Well, it has 3 ED elements and the MTFs are pretty awesome.

And we are talking about Zeiss here.

So are we in the case of the Batis. I guess only the hardcore manual focus fans would choose the Loxia over the Batis.

ED elements are not that expensive... Just different properties glass? Aspherical elements and big curvature elements, thos are more expensive to fabricate. And fluorite.

Indeed we are talking about Zeiss. However, lets look at Zeiss themselves.

Manual focus, 85mm. Zeiss Milvus 85mm f1.4!

It has 11 elements of which 3 ED elements. It is an f1.4 lens, meaning much larger lens elements. Which shows in the weight: 1280 grams. Price? $1649

This 85mm f2.4 Loxia has a silly price even for Zeiss standards?

That, and the 85mm space is pretty well saturated. Even if we exclude all the odd brands, we have the Sony GM, Zeiss Batis, two Sony A-mount adaptables (including the dirt cheap but pretty sharp f/2.8 version, itself a derivative of an old Zeiss design), and if the EF-E adapters are brought into the equation, the place becomes positively crowded (Canon EF / Canon L / Sigma / Tamron... you get the drill).
