So the sigma 50mm Art has some competition:

 ... at 1500$ ...

The MTFs do look impressive for a f/1.4 lens though ...

I think the sigma wins on price, size and weight are a closer run battle.

In these days of overpopulation it's wise to be a "Family Planner" Ouch!

There are only the
  • Sonnar 55mm f1.8
  • FE 50mm f1.8
  • E 50mm f1.8 OSS
  • Loxia 50mm f2
  • And now Planner 50mm f1.4
Well, maybe you sort of have a point.

There is still room for 50 macro, 50 pancake, collapsing 50, tilt/shift 50, 50 stf ...

I sort of suspect they noticed that they can make bucket loads of money with these (popular) lenses.

The FE 50mm f/1.8 surely doesn't cost more than 50$ in production and the development effort was low.

The profit margins for the Sonnar and Planar are probably perverse.

Honestly I don't think that Sony is making much money with their cameras but they are ripping you apart on the lens side.

Yes they seemed to apply the business model of the PlayStation to the camera market at the beginning : sell the base product at cost and fill the pockets with accessories. But now the mark II cameras are not cheap either (3500 euros for the a7r2)
