Nothing can be done about it? There is software to correct this kind of volumetric distortion for fish eye lenses, Fisheye-Hemi:

And there is software to correct this kind of distortion for linear corrected wide angle lenses , DXO Viewpoint 2 or DXO Pro 9:

Not perfect correction, but it goes a long way.

I would go not for OLD 12mm/15mm versions - it's likely that they run into reddish color shifts towards the borders.

With "too extreme" I suppose you're talking about 10mm at FF, right?
