Probably because the sensor has little time to "desaturate" prior of taking the shot ?

But I don't think that it's significant really.

The primary no-go is artificial light (banding effects).

The A7R II switches to 12 bits when in silent mode, when long exposure noise reduction is switched on, when in BULB mode, when in continuous shooting mode, or when shooting bracketed and continuous.

 

Only the uncompressed RAW format option gives real 14 bits RAW anyway.
