Quite a nice lens, the bokeh looks pleasant too. Was it a loaner from a "reader"?

Well, 28mm fell out of grace with photographers, mostly. 35mm is the standard "normal" wide, and 28mm just is a bit uncomfy between that and the really wide 24mm. So, partly a problem of demand.
Besides that, Canon still has its 28mm f1.8 USM in its line up, and just replaced the old 28mm f2.8 with the new 28mm f2.8 IS.
