For your entertainment ...

The Panasonic 12-35mm has a "RAW" distortion of 5.8% at 12mm.

Honestly speaking I just don't understand what Panasonic is thinking here. This is a 1200EUR lens for god's sake.

Let´s hope Pana does better with the upcoming 35-100 f/2.8... For the short range I will wait for a M.Zuiko version of the 12-60 legend.

Certainly not perfect. What matters however is the the final image quality after software correction (in camera/ in Raw converter). If the lens delivers a sufficently high border/corner distortion, the quality loss caused by the distortion correction may not be of much concern and the final image quality could still be better than competing offers.

What counts in the end is the final image. Nowadys distotion corrects in any decent raw converter with a good lens profile automatically.

This is why I trade less distortion for better border resolution anyday. if your subject doent show the distortion you dont need to correct it and you end up with an even image.

Well, the associated interpolation has a negative impact on the MTFs at 12mm. It is a lossy procedure which is clearly recognized by Imatest (see the early Samsung tests where I measured both). Normally I would rather measure the RAW data but in MFT land you don't really have a serious choice.

It is small.

Seems that almost all lenses are design that way now. Look at RAW files of the Sony RX100. This looks like a fisheye:

The Oly 12/2,0 has RAW distortion of 5,4% according to your tests, too. And this is a prime lens and it isn't cheap either.

How is the center and corner resolution in jpg / RAW of the 12-35 @12mm and F2,8 and F5,6?

Would be very interesting to know how much resolution you have to give up for distortion correction.

Is it the correct that is causing the smearing we saw in the trees ?

No, usually smearing in corners has to do with come (if i am correct) and heavy CA. "Correcting" barrel distortion just gives a more soft result, not a smeared result.

It just keeps getting better and better. Then again, Markus was complaining about strong pincushion distortion in his "sneak preview" thread for Nikon 24-85 lens so apparently it's not just limited to µ4/3. It seems lately the lens is getting criticized more for the high CA's, especially on Olympus cameras. It does have some short comings. Do you think we will be seeing the review soon? (I'm assuming the distortion figures were from your testing.)

My wild guess is this lens had issues (decentered) and is being replaced <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
