Yikes, crazy price. Even if the pound is very low at the moment, it still is a bit higher than the Euro.
Here (the Netherlands) its official price is €799, but can be bought for €719 (including tax).
Compared to the Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM it is not such a bargain.. it can be bought for €709 at the same store, and the Canon is better built, less heavy, has USM and a slightly better range.
Compared to the Nikon it has a few plusses (less expensive, lighter, smaller, less barrel distortion) and minuses (no VR, no AF-S).

In the US it's much more affordable: $700 at B&H and Adorama. Even after adding international shipping and immigration fees, it remains a great value considering the specs (in Switzerland the lens is 1200 CHF!! Just nuts).
Optically it seems to have much better corners than the 17-40L and it seems to match the Nikkor 16-35 VR. It is also weather sealed. The AF-S doesn't bother me as focus speed is not really an issue on a UWA. The only downer compared to the Nikkor is the lack of VR.
