Tokina 17-35 f/4 review?
#1
Hi Klaus & Markus,

Do you plan on reviewing the new Tokina 17-35 f/4 lens on fullframe at some point in the future?

I'm seriously considering it for my D800 as a potential alternative to the Nikkor 16-35 f/4.

From what I saw online, it seems to have very low barrel distortion which is a major aspect of a UWA lens (for me).

I guess other people may be very interested in this test as an alternative to manufacturers' offering.

Thanks!

How about an update on the 16-28, which to me is a more interesting lense?

It seems the price of the lens (£829.99) is not cheap at all <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Ken Rockwell has a review of this lens; in summary better than the Nikon 17-35 in terms of resolution and no distortion. Very light, he rec's it highly!

Yikes, crazy price. Even if the pound is very low at the moment, it still is a bit higher than the Euro.

Here (the Netherlands) its official price is €799, but can be bought for €719 (including tax).

Compared to the Canon EF 17-40mm f4 L USM it is not such a bargain.. it can be bought for €709 at the same store, and the Canon is better built, less heavy, has USM and a slightly better range.

Compared to the Nikon it has a few plusses (less expensive, lighter, smaller, less barrel distortion) and minuses (no VR, no AF-S).

In the US it's much more affordable: $700 at B&H and Adorama. Even after adding international shipping and immigration fees, it remains a great value considering the specs (in Switzerland the lens is 1200 CHF!! Just nuts).

Optically it seems to have much better corners than the 17-40L and it seems to match the Nikkor 16-35 VR. It is also weather sealed. The AF-S doesn't bother me as focus speed is not really an issue on a UWA. The only downer compared to the Nikkor is the lack of VR.
