I guess it comes down to expectations of what you want it to do. The main selling point is to enable full frame look with a crop sensor. We're talking shallow depth of field. In that application border resolution isn't so important in practice.
Of course it is no long term replacement for native lenses in the long term, but could help many making a transition.
