Metabones Speed Booster adapter
#1
Initially for Sony NEX and MFT. Fuji is planned.

Interesting concept - basically a backend wide-angle 0.7x converter:

I conjectured about this last year but was shot down on another forum. Looks like it as possible all along <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

It is intriguing in its simplicity. However, I'm wondering whether "one size fits all" really works here.

A tele converter cannot be used on all lenses either.

These have been wanted ever since the concept of crop sensor came about... but I too am sceptical about its real performance, at faster speeds anyway.

Mechanical issues aside, I've found teleconverters to be not bad in general as long as you don't use it with a fast lens (say f/2 or faster). I suspect the same may be true here, that slower ratios are much more forgiving. So those hoping for insane speeds are probably too optimistic.

Send them email that you want one for the review.

I am sure they will mail you one.

Lensrentals had a play with the adapter... and I'm glad to say it looks like my pessimism was wrong and the adapter largely does what it promises!

The application is still rather niche to me. Thinking of scenarios of why *I* might want one, I can only think of one: to have focus peaking while using MF full frames lenses giving a full frame style output.

The border resolution is not that hot though. Which seems to confirm to some degree that one size does not fit all.

I guess it comes down to expectations of what you want it to do. The main selling point is to enable full frame look with a crop sensor. We're talking shallow depth of field. In that application border resolution isn't so important in practice.

Of course it is no long term replacement for native lenses in the long term, but could help many making a transition.

It can double as a EF-NEX adapter, which is nice for many (including me). I'll wait for the price to settle down some though.
