From memory, wasn't the D300 or D300s said to be using the "same AF" as the D3? I think I remember reports it was quite a different story in the field though. Nikonians will correct me.

I'm not a nikonian <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />... But yes they have the same AF modul and metering sensor, and they both cope AF with the matrix metering system. Though I'm not sure about the difference in programming behind. But if there's a difference in practical terms, I guess it could be because of the AF point coverage on the frame.

AF & metering systems of 1D-X and 5D-III seem to be a different story though... AF modules could be more or less the same but 5D-III is not equipped with a 100K RGB sensor for metering, which helps AF system for moving objects. I think this should make a difference.

But all in all, as you and Popo already mentioned, I agree too that the AF and metering performance of 5D3 is clearly improved (at least on paper)...
