Canon 11-24/4 becomes real
#1
Although I know I spoil this forum's chances of getting awarded as one forum with the longest silences, I put in a note that - finally, after years of suffering and expecting, Canon users now have the choice between two ultra wide zooms (and maybe soon three).

1 f-stop slower than the meanwhile veteran 14-24/2.8 for Nikon, they dare to make a 11-24/4 (!).

These 3 mm shorter FL and 1 f-stop less cost 1000$ more than Nikon's competition (with a decent adapter, a bit less than that. Congrats, Canon! 11mm is something really cool. Unfortuanetly, it's too obvious: A lot of people will complain about making Nikon's "mistake" with the bulbous front element and no filter thread.

Now, lets see if Sigma makes the rumor of a similar Art lens come true. And also, how Sigma deals with the filter challenge. Making an own adapter could be an idea, who knows?

Personally, I'm very interested if that Canon lens is as sensitive to side- and backlight as Nikkor is.

Pricey ... but interesting.

I am very jealous.  I have no Canon bodies, and won't get any.

Let's see how much it weighs...

I thought this would be fun when the first rumours kicked off, but now with the rumoured price... it is a lot less interesting. It would have been nice to have a wide rectilinear for crop, and ultra mega hyper wide on full frame in one lens.

Sticking to Canon lenses, I have to wonder if de-fishing the fisheye zoom would be "good enough" at a much lower cost? The Sigma 12-24 is even cheaper. Of course I'm just comparing field of view here.

popo, I was not talking about the existing Sigma 12-24 (which is already listed as "discontinued" at Adorama). There's a rumor of a 14-24/4 Art coming for it, but also disappointment as it wasn't in Sigma's lineup at photokina.

And Klaus, couple of weeks ago you wanted to have Sigma filter drawers for a tele zoom at 2000$. Funny, Canon gets away with no drawer at 50% more… ^_^

I recall some wide angles with revolving filters, but never a wide-angle zoom. Now, how to use ND filters or polarizers with this beast? Maybe Canon's was smart and used the same diameter for the tulip front barrel, so on could use Lee or that other costly solution? We'll see.

Your contributions to breaking the silence are welcome here JoJu!

Just shows the market difference between the pro FF and amateur APSc,  the Canon zoom lens 10-18mm F4.5/5.6 which turned out to be a veritable bargain at 300 euros or so, and a 10x price difference for FF,  (I know the comparative FLs and fixed F4 differ).

Bulbous front element, bulbous price!

Joju, I got it that you were talking about an Art version, but for now all we have is the older one. Given their other recent lenses, I would hope any newer one will be more of an improvment and not just a new skin for the same optical design.

As for filters, I can understand having NDs in various forms, but a polariser? I recall even at 24mm equivalent you can get significant variations across a frame from using one.

Also had a quick play in a calculator. The difference in diagonal FoV between 12 and 11mm is less than I thought, at approximately 122 and 126 degrees respectively. So if Sigma do come up with something nice at a decent price, I don't think the 1mm difference would be that significant.

Nope. That wasn't me with the filters. Markus was the one.

I never used them thus I am not missing them.

Of course you're right, Klaus, my bad, sorry. Then this remark goes to Markus.

As for the filters: An ND filter is somthing I could have used a couple of times, but the polarizer is a different thing. As you already said, popo: With such a wide angle there's a lot of sky to cover and depending of the angle of sun I got nearly everything from no polarizing effect to maximum in one picture. Don't like that too much.

Steep price, true. But depending from it's performance, especially flare resistance it might be worth to pay for some specialists. I still like the Nikkor very much, especially for interiors where flare is hardly an issue, it's great to have it.

The German Canon website leaked the lens (11-24mm f4 L USM) in a webpage, boasting competitionless performance.

This probably means that the official announcement is near.
