Still digesting the details. I'm most curious if the 50mm is based on the old one, or a new design, as the old one's focus shift was a deal breaker for me.

Read your own link, my friend:

It's 13 elements in 8 groups, the old was 8/6. It's also much longer, 99.9mm vs 68.6mm, but, surprisingly, it is also lighter: 470g vs 505g.

The old 50mm f/1.4:

New one is totally different. 13/8 elements/groups of which one aspherical and 3 SLD, compared to 8/6 with one aspherical on the old one. As such it gains over 30mm in length at approximately the same diameter, but has managed to take a slight diet from 505g to 470g. No MTF chart that I can see yet.

As much as I like the Zeiss 2/50 makro, I do wish for AF at times and still looking for something to fill that hole. Could this be it?

Edit: Spinifex got there quicker than I did Smile I did dare to compare it to the Zeiss Otus while I was at it...

Given the quality of the 35/1.4, I put myself just on an not yet existing pre-order list. That's just it for me.

"Good" thing with Sigma: After announcement there will be a couple of weeks/months until it's delivered. Smile So plenty of time to sell the Nikkor 50/1.4 G and prepare the financial transfer. I guess, Nikon will not like this lens

Well with the announcement of the Nikon 35 / 1.8,it will be interesting who buys the Sigma or the Nikon. At the Sigma list price there won't be a lot of room for Nikon to play silly buggers on price. I suppose there will be people who will buy the Zeiss 50 instead of the Sigma 50 but I'm not sure how many will be real photographers.

I know that all I need is a decent f/1.8 for the things that I do, but it is becoming harder and harder to resist the Sigma f/1.4 lenses.

I don't know why I'm so hooked for Sigma Art lenses. I used to buy Nikon lenses because it's not hard to beat them by price but by quality? Different story. Now since Sigma came up with this type of lenses, fast, sharp and in my eyes sort of airish bokeh some things changed. Now I would first look at Sigma and then at Nikon. Maybe it's also a sympathy thing - comparatively small manufacturer comes up with a full size quality improvement while Nikon keeps on not listening to customers, appears to be arrogant (maybe I'm wrong with this, but that's how they communicate in general).

About the new 58/1.4 I read several opinions and summaries. Super creamy bokeh but not top in sharpness especially wide open. Anyway, at this price tag I expected a better lens. Probably Sigma's able to repeat the trick "half the price and better sharpness" again. In any case, Sigma's manual focus rings are just the way I like them, Nikon's are moving to easily, I prefer a bit more resistance for the moments I need manual focus.

And the Sigma 50mm looks better to me, too.

Sigma has a run for sure.

And even the 18-200mm receives the A1 QC treatment.

#8
I hope Sigma will make a 58mm f1.4 Art soon  Rolleyes

#9
? Seriously, Frank? Did you miss the 50/1.4 announcement?

#10
Bet a lot of people were hoping on 50/1.2A. Oh well.
