These have been wanted ever since the concept of crop sensor came about... but I too am sceptical about its real performance, at faster speeds anyway.
Mechanical issues aside, I've found teleconverters to be not bad in general as long as you don't use it with a fast lens (say f/2 or faster). I suspect the same may be true here, that slower ratios are much more forgiving. So those hoping for insane speeds are probably too optimistic.
