D800 issues
#1
Hi All,

most of you already know that there are ongoing discussions about some D800 issues. Some of them seem to be false alarms, but some other look serious...
Any ideas if the AF issues and the poor IQ on LCD for %100 magnified LiveView can be corrected by firmware updates?

AF issues due to a badly aligned sensor can not be helped with software updates for the camera. AF issues which stem from AF sensor design can't be corrected with it either. AF issues seen with particular lens models may or may not be fixable through software update (24mm f1.4 comes to mind). AF issues to do with logic can be helped with software update, like for instance working focus trapping.

Any 100% live view issue should be fixable, unless it is set in the silicon and there is no room to implement it better in software. I have not read about this live view issue though, so no idea what it is really about.

this is probably another useless answer from me - and i'm not pushing for any particular camera, but i have now seen many pictures from my friends 800, and have corresponded with him many times re. the pictures - he has no complaints to me about anything and neither would i if i was achieving those quality pictures with as little work in post as he is apparently doing - but of course i could be wrong, the camera is not in my hands(and most likely never will be-i have too many excellent other brand lenses), but i do know his work very well -

so maybe, if there are problems with this camera, it is a QC thing and the people who are having problems should return their camera under their shops 'no questions' returns policy and ask for another one please (i can recommend a shop that has such a policy that works very well even half way around the world)

Serkan, relax, the camera is hardly off the shelves. Wait for the bugs to be worked out, if there any, before you buy! Nikon has never put crap on the street and they won't this time either. Just let the obvious stuff work itself out. Keep taking good pictures with the D700 until the new cameras have been tested, reviewed and tested again. In the meantime, good shooting!<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

I'm not on a rush, VL... I just try to justify the delay for the D800 purchase <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />...

It seems likely that the 100% live view issue might be hardware implementation related, but it is not like the camera needs to do something different for 50% live view magnification.... I hope that some software engineer just goofed up and they did not test it well, though.

What it looks like is that the images are sampled with a 50% resolution for data rate purposes, and upscaled when "magnified" more in a quick and ugly fashion.

That's right... But you know, "return process" is something that we process consultants really would like to stay away <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />...

I assume it cannot be an issue concerning the LCD resolution... And if it is an upscapling issue, I guess it can be solved with a firmware...

It most certainly is no LCD issue. If indeed just a 50% image gets processed for live view, for data rate purposes, then the image will always have to be "upscaled" for a fake 100% view. If enough processing power is available, it just might be possible to do a resampling for nicer upscaling, but it never will be "sharp".

The interesting thing about this issue as it is now, is that the jagged blocky 100% view we see now actually helps with focussing... Apparently the jaggies "snap" into focus.
