Sigma DP1 and DP2 Merrill
#1
Is anybody as excited as I am?
#2
Prices are still unknown though...

Also I'm just thinking, now when Sigma suddenly dropped the price of SD1 "Merrill" to $2300, whoever bought the previous version (SD1 "Dick" I guess?) for full price are not very happy <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

They promised to give some sigma-points to early buyers, that can be used for buying more sigma gear.

Amount of compensation is not specified.

Thats a sony nex-7/ nex-5n/Fuji gx-1 without the possibility to change lenses and without an electronic viewfinder. Control layout is presumably also worse. I cant see whats exciting about that. The Foveon sensor is different not any better than a 20MP Bayer sensor. When it comes to low light perfromcance Foveon sensors are actually much worse. The only adavntage I can see is that the sigmas are probably a bit more compact than the sony when you take lens size into account. But then the new Canon powershot GX sounds more convincing also, since it has a zoom lens and is likly cheaper.

Admitedly the Foveon sensor is exciting technology in itself. From a practical point of view I can see however no convincing argument to invest in a camera using such sensor, given its infant state of development.

Price will most certainly be a defining factor.

I haven't quite followed after the DP1, but it seemed from the samples at the time that the lens was pretty much excellent (from center to borders) and that in absolute terms, the pictures looked really great for a textbook landscape camera. But it was four years ago :-)

So I can see the promise here if it stays "cheap" and is able to deliver super crisp high detail images, compared to the aforementioned and possibly much more expensive (to be seen) NEX7/XPro 1.

The cheaper SD1 Merrill might swing some who were blocked by the original SD1 pricing, and longer term I think Sigma still have a good chance to get more mainstream traction for the sensor and get costs further down.

Personally I would gladly trade off high ISO performance for the colour accuracy of the foveon. Not everyone shoots ISO-infinity all the time, and when you can use low ISO, I think there is enough of a tangible difference. Use the right tool for the job. Bayer pattern type sensors can only compensate their inherent limitations by increasing pixel count, which has not been happening anywhere near as fast as it could.

It seems that the recently announced Sigma lenses for NEX and M43 finally make sense: they're the ones used in the new DP1M and DP2M. I still expect Sigma to go for an interchangeable lens version of the DP at some point, but they should hurry up, since the market is getting more crowded.

Hi, Certainly this is good news for those who wanted to buy the Sigma SD1 if the price was right,Sigma announce however the the new price will be $3,300 (quoted $2,200 elsewhere) on sale in mid-march.It sounds like their being very decent dropping the price(economies in production costs of the sensor) but it must be said without a price reduction the camera was dead in the water, very dead! It leaves us to see what these points towards other Sigma products, lens etc amounts to for those poor early buyers.I know many will be jumping for joy, but I think others like me might feel well out of it. None the less good news.
