Photozone gents & tech
#1
Dear Zoners,

Lately, I get the feeling that these fora have been welcoming more and more people with scientific backgrounds. People who are able to interpret, analyze & discuss things on a rather advanced level. I think it's greatly enriching and many of us who have been following this site for years have seen their knowledge constantly stimulated and challenged in the course. After all, PZ has always been a gear oriented site.

All for the best then ?

Not quite if people with less technical knowledge start to receive pedantic answers or sarcasms as they post less educated questions or assumptions. I don't feel it happened so much to me as I don't enter too technical debates but I'm still reading them and notice that. One might argue that "life is harsh, get along with it" but we have enough high profile posters here who are 100% humble and nice to prove this harshness (relatively speaking, of course, PZ still is very quiet) is unnecessary and counter productive.

So before typing rhetorical questions,"Uhmm's",etc.. please ask yourself if it's really necessary to get your message across. Or is it just me <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />?

Just my 2 cents,

Yes, fully agreed.

"Remember the human" is certainly something to be remembered on both sides.

It is difficult not to forget this at times.

I agree. This is one of the main reasons that I do not chime in during the discussions. I am sure that at least one or two certain people would flame with sarcasm seemingly intended to make me feel stupid.

The other reason is that I try to adhere to my favorite Mark Twain quote: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

I fully agree...

One thing maybe can be mentioned additionally: some may not use the (english) language perfectly, as it is not their native language. Therefore, sometimes it might happen that what they try to mean and what they wrote could be different. And I'd like to emphasize that, members of this community have the right to intervene and they should not be reluctant to do whatever it takes to disabuse from a misconception. I personally was more or less lucky in this respect, and grateful to the members who intervened... And also, I hope this post itself does not cause such misconceptions because of my english <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />...
