Call back of D7000
#1
I thought you might like to know that Nikon has called back a large number of D7000 housings due to the sensor overheating. There is an article on "lespixelistes.com" in French, detaling the call back. All Canon'ists are smiling and the Nikonistes are scratching their heads. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> Apparently, Nikon has designed the sensor, based on the Sony standard, but it looks like something went wrong!!! The D90 looks pretty good <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> Vieux Loup

If so it sounds like the reported A33/A55 issue (can't load the mentioned website)

Was there a recall for these models?

No, but there was some news about sensor overheating in movie mode I think.

Well, the sensor is expected to have this overheating problem, because the pixels are way "overstacked" compared to Nikon standard rules & guidelines.. Standard Nikon sensor should be 12mp (or multiples of 12)...<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

I'd suppose A55 and K-5 are on the line...

Can you point me to these guidelines? or was it just a joke? I'm really asking.

Thanks in advance,

I'm just joking...

As far as I know, the sensor and electronics in D7000 are designed by Nikon and manifactured by Sony. So it's an earned joke...<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />.

Not really, the Sony A55-33 sensors do not have a normal sensor overheating problem. There is something special about the Sony A55/33's:

They use live view (from image sensor) always, they have a closed sensor compartment (due to the mirror) and they have IS in the body (sensor moving).

The Sony IS implementation produces heat. The sensor with continuous live view produces heat. The closed sensor compartment contains heat.

All reasons why the Sony A55/33 overheat sooner than other DSLRs with live view, has not much to do with the sensors themselves. Sony recommends to switch IS (SSS) off when using the camera with video or for longer times with photos. A shame they do not have lenses with IS...

Quite appalling that Sony would let themselves surprise by overheating issues when they design a camera to use its sensor almost all the time. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> Curious to see how it evolves on k5 then.

Also, all the statements that Nikon "designs" the sensor and then Sony manufactures them... sound rather dubious to me. I can see Nikon building side electronics and requesting some fine tuning but that would be about it.

I really don't know but it seems to me this Nikon - Sony relationship is sometimes a little overblown, often by "prediction gurus".

Can anybody point to some press release or literature about their partnership?

Would be interesting to see some sensor thermal output comparison with an IR camera <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

This issue seems to be overblown a bit... This link tells that the overheating problem of A55 occurs after 3min. with 40 degress ambient temperature (and with IS on). I wonder how would other sensors react in such a case... And also, any clues if this issue can have something to do with the new technology of A55?

OTOH, there's an another rumour which may be related to this issue...
