Just pulled the trigger on a 7D
#1
As the title states, I just ordered a new Canon EOS 7D. This will be my first brand new camera which is exciting in itself but I cant wait to try the 7D out.

I currently have a 50D and 1D Mk II and I am hoping the 7D slots in between the two taking most of the pros and less of the cons. Ideally I would like an APS-C 1D since my type of photography is usually focal length limited but require great AF (I do mostly birding, static and in flight). Hopefully the 7D's AF will be up to par for me and I should get even more detail than the 50D offers (when it nails the focus).

I also look forward to trying out the movie mode as I will have a new addition to the family within the next few days!

From those who have used the 50D or 1DII and have gone on to the 7D, how would you compare them? What do you think has improved? And do you think anything is worse on the 7D?

Cheers

I had a 50D before getting the 7D also. The only weakness of the 7D over 50D I can think of is the lack of ability to change focus screens if you ever need that. Of course the main difference between the two is the upgraded AF system. While it does help having more points, like any other AF system it can get confused so you still need to exercise caution when more than one point is active. With the 50D I found I ended up using the middle AF point only most of the time, but the 7D's more points means I do move that single point a lot more now. I can't say I notice a real world difference in detail between the two, but the 7D image does look better beyond ISO1600.

I dont think I will use a different focus screen on the 7D - never have so far however I was toying with the idea if I went FF...

As for the AF, With the 50D I could only really trust the centre point. With the 1D I could trust all of them especially for BIF.

The extra detail is definitely an advantage over the 1DII, however I am hoping I can use the 7D at 1600 as the 50D had too much noise for my liking at 1600.

I only mentioned the focus screen since I got my second native MF lens recently, and in that application it could be handy to be able to change it.

I don't know if they changed it between the 1D mk1 and mk2, but I have the mk1 too as a gamble buying a "faulty" one that actually worked. I haven't tested it much yet, but I'd provisionally say the 7D is comparable to or better than the 1D1 when using all points for BIF.

On noise, if 1600 on 50D didn't satisfy, it probably wont on the 7D either. Above that I found the 50D would give banding noise at times, which is absent on the 7D making it much better to me.

That's a pity about ISO 1600, from what I have read, in the lab, the 7D is about a stop better but obviously this doesn't hold in real terms.

Can you tell me what the shutter on the 7D sounds like? Is it more akin to the 50D or the 1D?

It is a bit hard to quantify the 7D noise quality... I think it is about a stop more usable, but that's not to say it is necessarily a stop better depending on how you measure it... I used to use the 50D regularly to 1600, rarely to 3200 and above that it was just too messy. On the 7D, I use it regularly to 3200, and haven't had a need to go really higher. Rather than look at other samples and comparisons, you'll see for yourself on your own style of shots soon enough <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

On shutter sound, it has been too long since I sold the 50D on so I can't remember side by side. The 7D did sound different, a bit... let's say "quicker and lighter".

Thanks for the link Miro, he certainly shows that the 7D is very capable for landscapes as well as long focal length use <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />)

Hi Allan,

Very exciting! Do you want to keep both other camera's? There is a chance you will be using the 7D most of the time now. A backup camera is always nice, as I experienced when my camera was at the repair centre for 3 months. (I didn't/don't have a digital back-up)

Do you let us know you first impressions when the camera arrives?

And more important <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' /> , let us know when the bairn is born and how mother and child are doing!

Best wishes,

Congrats! Brand-new stuff indeed are exciting.

Allow me to be the unpopular guy and point out some things for the sake of better understanding. Let me first start off by saying that you're not going to be disappointed with the 7D. However... I had a look at your flickriver links and it seems that you could have benefited well from a FF camera. For example, if you take your 'most interesting' photos (as rated by flickr), very few of them (e.g. 3 out of the top 20) might not have been possible with, say, a 5D2. But we're talking about adding one more camera to your collection... so you have the 50D and the 1D2 for such critical/BIF shots. A 5D2 would've been better suited for the other 17/20.
Hopefully the 7D's ... and I should get even more detail than the 50D offers (when it nails the focus).

Don't forget that wanting more resolution (from high pixel density sensors) reduces the smallest f number you can use before you start to lose resolution (see DLA table). On your 50D, you were able to go down to ~f/7.6 but now on the 7D, anything below f/6.8 will reduce the maximum resolution. Are your lenses good enough for this? While the problem applies to all cases, it hits landscape use the most because you often want to stop down a lot to maximise DOF (but then you'll lose resolution).

Also, since you're planning to see more detail or magnify the final images more (e.g. viewing at 100% or printing larger rather than resizing down or printing at the same sizes), you're also going to have reduced DOF. In other words, less things will be sharp when you view at 100%. Remember to consider this point alongside the DLA thing I said above too.

So, if I was in your situation, I think I'd have sold the 1D2 and bought a 5D2 instead of the 7D and keep the 50D for AF. If AF was that important maybe then sell everything and just a 7D now and a 5D2 later for resolution.

I hope you don't take this post the wrong way... just wanted to make an informative post and give some alternate views.
