Inside a 1D
#1
I got a really cheap 1D sold as faulty, but it sounded minor. Only the rear wheel wasn't working and pretty much all other accessories were included. The menu was not navigable because of that, but I could change most settings by connected PC. I still had access to basic controls for shooting so that was fine. All for less than the cost of a high end filter.

This evening I tried to find the fault. The hard part was opening it as there were lots of screws hidden under the stuck on grips. Eventually I removed the back section.

As the wheel isn't working, I thought it could be either the wheel switch itself, or the related enable/disable switch. The latter seemed fine, so I took apart the wheel switch, cleaned the contacts, bent them out a bit more for more spring and reassembled. Still didn't work. I guess it's a loose or broken connection elsewhere then. This could be trickier than I thought...

Hi popo,

Very brave!

You may want to have a look at this for advancing further with the disassembly... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

I know it is in German, but I can't find the link anymore where somebody had a detailed description in English of the process. I think that actually was a movie rather than a writeup with photographs.

HTH, kind regards, Wim

Thanks for the link. I couldn't find anything when I was searching previously. So the 1D mk2 is very close to the mk1? Looks like I took out more screws than I needed to. Will have a look at the connections around the rear panel. If I don't fix it, I think I'll just reassemble it and use it as is.

The only problem with playing with the mk1 is now I have an urge to get the mk4...

The cameras should be very similar in design. If anything, the 1D should be less complicated.

As to the Mk IV, well, yes. but it does come at a price, especially as they aren't really available used. You can actually get a good Mk III for quite a bit less currently (less than half the price of a Mk IV), so maybe that is an option to consider? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Rainer Hönle, who runs gletscherbruch.de and goes by the name nightshot in forums, is certainly the one to contact with such an issue. He's well known and highly regarded as someone who is able to fix even the weirdest problems with canon gear. Especially those issues that Canon itself seems unable or unwilling to fix.

I just had an interesting comment on another forum I posted this to. Apparently the wheel on the 1D works differently from that of newer Canon models. It appears that you have to hold a function button at the same time to have an effect in most cases. So there is a chance that there is no fault in the first place, other than operator error. In my defence, this camera was sold by a dedicated used dealer who stated the non-functioning wheel as a fault.

Unfortunately I wont be able to test this out until I get home some hours from now.

Oops, I thought you were aware of this ... welcome to the club, then, I stepped into the same trap when I upgraded from 10D to 1D <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

But did you get as far as taking the camera apart? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' /> It shouldn't take long to put the screws back in, and hopefully there is enough stick left on the grip surfaces.

Of Canon cameras with the rear wheel, I have owned the 50D, 5D1 and now 7D so I assumed it would work in a similar way...

I do hope there is enough sticky stuff left indeed. I do hope it was just user error on the dealer side...

I am very interested to hear if that is indeed the issue, please do let us know.

I got home, partially reassembled it enough to turn on. Held the menu button and... the wheel worked! That was likely the "problem". The dealer I bought it from goes through a lot of used kit, so it is natural to assume they know what they're doing. But I guess it worked out better for me. An (apparently) fully working 1D for not a lot! Just need to do a full reassemble of all the bits now and give it a more in depth test to make sure I didn't break something else in taking it apart...
