I got a really cheap 1D sold as faulty, but it sounded minor. Only the rear wheel wasn't working and pretty much all other accessories were included. The menu was not navigable because of that, but I could change most settings by connected PC. I still had access to basic controls for shooting so that was fine. All for less than the cost of a high end filter.
This evening I tried to find the fault. The hard part was opening it as there were lots of screws hidden under the stuck on grips. Eventually I removed the back section.

As the wheel isn't working, I thought it could be either the wheel switch itself, or the related enable/disable switch. The latter seemed fine, so I took apart the wheel switch, cleaned the contacts, bent them out a bit more for more spring and reassembled. Still didn't work. I guess it's a loose or broken connection elsewhere then. This could be trickier than I thought...
