I just had an interesting comment on another forum I posted this to. Apparently the wheel on the 1D works differently from that of newer Canon models. It appears that you have to hold a function button at the same time to have an effect in most cases. So there is a chance that there is no fault in the first place, other than operator error. In my defence, this camera was sold by a dedicated used dealer who stated the non-functioning wheel as a fault.
Unfortunately I wont be able to test this out until I get home some hours from now.
