Buying Wide Angle for Pentax
#1
I'm going through what options I have. I like prime lenses, but I believe both the Sigma 8-16mm and Pentax 12-24mm are of high quality and rival the Pentax 14mm f/2.8 and 15mm f/4 Limited in image quality, or am I wrong?

The 14mm f/2.8 is big, but the 15mm f/4 Limited is a small lens, so that's an advantage, but size isn't really something I'm worried about on any of these lenses.

I'm leaning towards the new Sigma 8-16mm. Other than brightness and price, is there a reason I should not buy it?

If you can get a good sample of the Sigma it'll be a no brainer.

However, the primes are simply more "stable". You may also wait for the next review ... ;-)

What is the next review? The new Pentax DA* 10-16? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> I'm waiting for that too, unless it's very late in its arrival.

I'm not getting my first pay check from my new job until the middle of August, so I'm not buying anything just yet <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

Also, I've got good experience getting good samples of Sigma lenses (105mm macro and 10-20mm), so hoping that will last <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

To be honest, I'd be tempted by the first version of the Sigma 10-20, the DA 12-24 is a very good lens, but I prefer the balance of aberrations of the Sigma. The Sigma 8-16 is a litle too extreme IMHO, unless you really need something that wide <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' />

I love the build and size of the DA 15mm Ltd and would add that to my kit if it were not for the price, the material value seems disproportionate to the price of £600 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

John

If I'd be interested in a 14/2.8 lens I'd surely get the Samyang.
